SARA'S Film Club presents the New York City premiere of writer-director Michael Rozek's 2023 film, MARIANNE. Dismantling cinematic conventions, Rozek rejects traditional narrative structure, inviting viewers into a liminal space that is nonlinear, atmospheric, and psychologically probing. Starring Isabelle Huppert as a single-character projection, her penetrating gaze remains fixed on the camera for the entirety of the film in confrontation (even conversation) with the viewer. Collapsing the boundaries between filmic fiction and lived experience, MARIANNE investigates the nature of storytelling. Ultimately, the film distills cinema to its most essential and profound definition: an experience that can transmit human emotion through space and time.

Following the screening, a conversation will take place between Rozek and curator Max Levin.
